Bipolar disorder, including mixed states, is associated with a high level of functional impairment. Effective management strategies that emphasize treatment of all phases of the illness may help reduce this impairment. One reason for poor long-term outcome in bipolar disorder is the misdiagnosis that often occurs because physicians lack knowledge about the presentation of bipolar disorder. Another reason is clinicians’ lack of knowledge about managing impulsivity and aggression, which are clinical markers for suicidal behavior in adolescents and often lead adults to urgent treatment. Finally, clinicians may not know enough about medications that are well-tolerated during the maintenance phase of illness. This activity was designed to meet the needs of participants in CME activities provided by the CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., who have requested information on bipolar disorder. There are no prerequisites for participating in this activity.
The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., designates each of these educational activities for a maximum of 0.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
