Mixed states in bipolar disorder often present a clinical crisis because they can combine the most serious symptoms of both mania and depression. Mixed episodes last longer than pure manic or depressive episodes and more frequently include psychosis, substance abuse, and suicidality. The proper recognition of mixed states is crucial so that appropriate treatment that is effective and that does not worsen the course of illness can be implemented. This activity was designed to meet the needs of participants in CME activities provided by the CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., who have requested information on mixed states in bipolar disorder. There are no prerequisites for participating in this activity.
The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., designates each of these educational activities for a maximum of 0.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
