CME Background Information

To obtain credit, study the material and complete the CME Posttest and Evaluation as instructed at the end of each activity.

Objectives

After completing each of these educational activities, you should be able to achieve the objective given in the activity.

Statement of Need and Purpose

Although not recognized by the DSM-IV, depressive mixed states are common in patients with mood disorders and often present a clinical crisis due to instability (e.g., patients’ rapidly shifting moods, outbursts of anger, and even suicidal impulses). Depressive mixed states are also associated with poorer treatment outcomes, both acute and long-term, compared with pure depressive or manic states. Thus, swift and accurate diagnosis and treatment of depressive mixed states are essential to alleviate symptoms and improve outcomes for patients with bipolar disorders. This activity was designed to meet the needs of participants in CME activities provided by the CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., who have requested information on depressive mixed states. There are no prerequisites for participating in this activity.

Accreditation Statement

The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation

The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., designates each of these educational activities for a maximum of 0.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
