Statement of Need and Purpose

Individuals with schizophrenia experience poor health and increased mortality due to both natural and unnatural causes. Side effects associated with antipsychotic treatment may contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. Although guidelines for monitoring and managing the physical health of patients with schizophrenia exist, they are not routinely implemented. This activity was designed to meet the needs of participants in CME activities provided by the CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., who have requested information on physical health issues in patients with schizophrenia being treated with atypical antipsychotics. There are no prerequisites for participating in this activity.

Disclosure of off-label usage: Dr. Fleischhacker has determined that, to the best of his knowledge, no investigational information about pharmaceutical agents that is outside U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved labeling has been presented in this activity.
