Patients with bipolar disorder are likely to present with a variety of symptoms and comorbidities, and children and elderly patients with bipolar disorder require special consideration. Bipolar depression can lower quality of life and substantially impair functioning. However, misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder is very likely because patients frequently fail to report manic episodes as periods of illness, which can often lead to a misdiagnosis of unipolar depression and the use of an incorrect, ineffective, and potentially harmful treatment strategy. These activities were designed to meet the needs of participants in CME activities provided by the CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., who have requested information on bipolar disorder. There are no prerequisites for participating in this activity.
The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The CME Institute of Physicians Postgraduate Press, Inc., designates each Case and Comment educational activity for a maximum of 0.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
